D.I.Y Body Piercing – I did it myself, can you fix it?

Do it yourself body piercings – where to start on this subject? !!

So, so many people come into our studio with DIY body piercings gone wrong and asking for help that quite frankly it horrifies me.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that if you do your piercing yourself, or get your mate to do it for you that it’s going to go wrong, but what I am saying is that there are so, so many things that can go wrong that is it really worth taking the risk? I’m also not insinuating that everyone of a certain age do their piercings themselves and then end up with problems I am simply talking generally about those that do – I appreciate that many, many, many people go to the professionals for their body piercings.

Now, I don’t know if other body piercers find that they are often called on for help with DIY piercings, but it seems to me that so many people are willing to compromise their health just to save a few quid! I must say however, that it usually is the younger generation that present with these problems but there has been the occassional ‘more mature’ person also and I really just can’t understand it.

I appreciate that not all younger people will be able to get the permission from their parents to get the piercing that they want, but why then would that young person be willing to let their friend do it for them behind their parents back with an ear piercing gun and an ear piercing stud? Is it general lack of education or is it simply ignorance?
Why anyone would want to shove a dirty safety pin through their skin and then go through the pain of trying to get some jewellery in it (usually the wrong size) to end up with a piercing that usually doesn’t resemble the piercing they wanted anyway is beyond me. Not to mention the endless amounts of health hazards that go hand in hand with that kind of activity and all the possible complications that may follow – usually ending up needing medical attention.

I have often heard people saying that body piercing is too expensive – that’s why they do it! But is it really?????? Lets put this in perspective here:
Acrylic nails £35 per time (every 4 weeks or so)
Hairdressers – colour, cut and blow dry £40 (every 6 weeks or so)
Night out on the town £30-£60 (every few weeks or so)
Meal out with friends £40-£100 (every month or so)

Now of course these are examples of which I am sure you can think of many, so body piercings £20-£40? (which you will have until you decide to take it out if looked after properly – it’s not every few weeks or so), in the grand scheme of things how expensive is it really? You get so much for your money at a professional studio that it just really doesn’t compare does it? Then of course I guess the ultimate question is what price tag can you put on your health?

So I guess this is a plea to all those DIY’ers out there who really don’t know what they are doing with body piercing – for your own and us body piercers sakes – please get it done professionally, it’s really not worth it if you don’t know what you’re doing.

What Body Piercing Do I Want?

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

The absolute truth of the matter that not everyone realises is that nearly all body piercings are anatomy dependent. What this means is that just because you have a tongue, doesn’t necessarily mean you can have a tongue piercing as your tongue may not be suitable. Just because you have a belly button, doesn’t mean that you can have it pierced, as again it may not be suitable. Just because you have a tragus, again it may not be suitable for a piercing. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – WE ARE ALL THE SAME BUT DIFFERENT!!!

Believe it or not, this IS NOT the body piercers’ fault! If the part of your anatomy is not suitable for a piercing, then a good body piercer will advise you of that rather than just give you the piercing anyway to get your money. I’m not saying that body piercers are just there for the money, as 99% of them love the job they do and will advise you if they think that your anatomy is not suitable for the particular piercing that you are wanting (after all, it is their job and they know what they’re talking about). HOWEVER! there are the odd few that have the philosophy that if you can pinch it then you can pierce it! Not a fantastic point of view in my opinion :0(

Lets take a few examples so that it’s clear what I’m gibbering on about, but generally it is almost impossible to say for definite without seeing it first :0)

Belly buttons: Innies, usually not a problem. Outies, depends on how much it protrudes. Surgically modified, depends on the way it has been modified.
Ears: Now these are a whole different ballgame. Ears come in so many different shapes and sizes that it is virtually impossible to say without seeing if the part you want pierced is suitable or not. Tragus – might be too small, Scaffold – cartilage may be too awkwardly shaped, Snug – may be so small can’t even see it!, Rook – may be too small etc, etc, etc
Tongue: May not be long enough, may be tongue tied, veins may be too close together.

These are just a few examples and of course the list is far more complex than the few that I have mentioned, but if your body piercer advises you against a particular piercing, be assured that it is for a good reason.

Basically, the point of the post is that it’s all very well wanting this piercing or that piercing but be advised by your piercer if you can actually get the piercing that you want. All being well 9 times out of 10 you will be able to, but don’t blame the piercer if you can’t,  we’re only here to help you!
