Do Oral Piercings Damage Teeth?

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Recently broadcast on the news was an artical regarding oral piercings and teeth damage.

It was said that Dentists are warning against oral piercings as they do irrepairable damage to teeth and should therefore be avoided. I have also noticed such posters hung on the walls at dentist practices and what is noticeable to me is that they only give you half the story !!!

Of course, any metal object clattering around in your mouth has the potential to do damage, especially if you are constantly playing with it with your teeth. It kind of goes without saying.

However, what is being neglected to be said here is that if your jewellery fits your piercing. i.e. you are wearing the correct jewellery and you do not play with the jewellery with your teeth then there is a 99.9% chance that your jewellery will never come into contact with your teeth therefore damage cannot be done.

The posters in the dentists and the topic raised on the news are misleading in the way that they state point blank that oral piercings such as tongue piercing damages teeth. They also mislead you into thinking that it is only the jewellery that is doing the damage rather than the individual. It is fairly obvious that if you often fiddle or play with jewellery in your mouth then not only can it have a detrimental effect on your piercing but also on your teeth. 9 times out of 10 problems with oral piercings are simply down to the individual not following this simple advice.

If the complete picture is given we can then make informed decisions.

Cleavage Surface Piercing Image Example Of The Cleavage Surface Piercing

I believe that surface piercings have had an awful lot of bad press and many people seem to have the wrong impression of them. It seems that many people are of the impression that ALL surface piercings reject regardless of where they are on the body and this really isn’t the case. It is true that surface piercings can reject but it is also true that if the piercing is done correctly and with the correct jewellery, then this is less likely to happen.

Surface piercings like all piercings do not like to be knocked and equally do not like a lot of movement, therefore some surface piercings are much more likely to reject than others for example hips.

Jewellery choice is equally as important. As surface piercings do not like upward pressure, jewellery causing this kind of tension on the area certainly will increase the likelihood of rejection whereas using jewellery specifically designed for surface piercings will help to eliminate this risk.

Surface piercings certainly need to be maintained and cared for during the healing process and ideally should avoid being caught on clothing as this can also help increase the risk of rejection.

Surface piercings can also be very unproblematic and trouble free, can be very elegant and beautiful and wonderful additions to anyone’s body art.
